Tour of the Facility: Exercise/Wellness
The activities staff promotes 'wellness' in several different formats.
Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 9 am, residents gather in the New Cassel Auditorium for exercise class. The trainers utilize flexibility exercises, along with small hand weights and movements done to music. The class size is usually about 25 people. Each Tuesday at 9 am, the residents have the opportunity to improve their balance with Tai Chi in the Auditorium. The Tai chi class averages about 25 participants. Immediately following exercise class on Thursday, the resident is invited to stay for Nintendo Wii, providing entertainment, along with various games like tennis, bowling and golf.
A national program is held each year in May entitled Senior Health and Fitness Week. The staff in activities collaborates with the staff in the health services area, to provide various activities for the residents and their families to exercise. One of the activities recently incorporated was a walk, scheduled on a day when the weather was beautiful. The walk is around the New Cassel campus, and three laps is estimated to be a mile. Many residents make this one mile walk a daily routine during nice weather.
