Franciscan Centre Celebrates 25th Anniversary

By Ric Miller, Director of Public Relations and Foundation President
In March 1985, the New Cassel Retirement Center's board of directors established an adult day program known as the Franciscan Adult Day Center.

This month, the Center - a ministry of the School Sisters of St. Francis - is celebrating its 25th Anniversary.  The program is open weekdays from 7 am to 6 pm.

Glenda Hallberg, who has spent 30 years with New Cassel, and University of Nebraska at Omaha gerontology student Kathleen Miller, created this adult day program at New Cassel, 900 N. 90th Street.

Over the years, the Franciscan Adult Day Center grew under the direction of Mary Palzkill, Brandi  Schneider and Paul Maginn, and now serves 40 to 45 participants daily with 75 men and women enrolled in the program.

In July 2004, the Franciscan Adult Day Center expanded its focus as it integrated resources from the McAuley-Bergan Adult Day Center.
Four years later, the facility changed its name to the Franciscan Centre.
It's licensed by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and partners with the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging, the Veterans Administration, and the Medicaid Waiver Program.

The centre specializes in serving adults with short-term memory loss, those with physical disabilities, and persons who benefit from socialization which helps decrease isolation and depression.

The Franciscan Centre serves caregivers by providing a structured, supervised setting for their loved ones.  Support services focus on health, nutrition, rehabilitation, therapeutic recreation, and transportation.
