Spirit of Francis Celebration Generates Support
By Ric Miller, Director of Public Relations and Foundation President
Phil Kreski, chairman of the Foundation Board of Trustees, provided a warm welcome to the 12th Annual Spirit of Francis Celebration . . . And with that welcome, launched an evening of celebration, support and success.
2011 Event Chairs were Mary & Rod Jewell, Janie & Mike Murnane, and Karen Stander and Patrick Griffin. This year the Spirit of Francis Celebration welcomed more in attendance and more in revenue, surpassing previous years.
Established in 2000 as a recognition event, the central focus of the event is the Spirit of Francis Award. Receiving this award was Gary George, the executive director of Hospice House of Omaha - The Josie Harper Residence. Caring for people in their final journey in life, creating an atmosphere of respect and dignity, and providing compassionate care for the person and the family, were recognized traits of George and St. Francis of Assisi.
Julie Masters, PhD, was the recipient of the Lempka Leadership Award. As the chair of the Gerontology Department at UNO, Dr. Masters has a "lets get to work" energy for the elderly. Humbly, she credited others for their inspiration.
The New Cassel Distinguished Community Service Award was awarded to Jim Hegarty, President & CEO of the Better Business Bureau - Nebraska & Fire Chief Michael McDonnell of the City of Omaha Fire & Rescue Division. The two organizations continue to work together on a wonderful community project called the FILE OF LIFE.
Oher highlights of the evening included a successful silent auction, official greeting by Sr. Marilyn Ketteler, new Provincial Leader of the School Sisters of St. Francis, entertaining remarks by emcee Patrik Griffin, and a live auction "Raise the Paddle" event to support the new Helping Hands Fund in the Foundation.
